The Battle of the Bulge (World War II) (Tourism)

The Battle of the Bulge (World War II)

The Ardennes, winter '44.
Now already 70 years ago, and still so present ...

A tribute to all these young men who perished fighting for the freedom we enjoy today.

Excursion 1 (one day battlefield tour): Bastogne and surroundings

We leave for Bastogne and meet there our battlefield guide.
The tour starts with a short introduction, gathered around the 11th Armored Division "Thunderbolt" Sherman tank, "Road to Liberty" milestone and the McAuliffe Monument at the Place McAuliffe.
We set off for the battlefield tour: Bizory, Bois de la Paix (Peace Wood), Bois Jacques (foxholes of the "Easy Company", well-known from the "Band of Brothers"), Foy, Recogne (US temporary cemetary and German cemetary), Noville (Combat Team Desobry) and the Mardasson. A quick lunch is taken in Bastogne.
We also visit the cellar where Gen. McAuliffe pronounced the historical "nuts !" as answer to the Germans who asked the Americans to surrender.
Other places we can visit, depending of tour program and time available: Villers-la-Bonne-Eau ("Desolation Corner"), Assenois, Patton Memorial, Champ, Longchamp, Boggess fort (breakpoint of the Bastogne encirclement), ...

Excursion 2 (one day battlefield tour): The Northern Shoulder

We leave for Sart, Vielsalm, Sankt Vith, Losheim gap (the Siegfried Line with the "Dragon Teeth"), Lanzarath, Büllingen, Bütgenbach, Waimes, Baugnez crossroad (Malmedy Massacre Memorial where 84 US prisonners of war were killed by Peiper's Kampfgruppe), Malmedy (free time for lunch), Ligneuville, Stavelot, Trois-Ponts, La Gleize (german Royal Tiger II Panzer tank and Museum). We also stop in Houffalize on our way back.

Excursion 3 (one day battlefield tour): The Southern Shoulder into the G-D of Luxemburg
We set off from Bastogne for a tour that will lead us via Wiltz (or Neffe - Mageret - Longvilly), Antoniushof, Clervaux, Marnach, Dasbourg (bridge on the Our), Diekirch (Museum), Echternach, down to Sandweiler (German cemetary) and Hamm (US cemetary including Gen. Patton's grave).

----------

Excursion 4 (one day tour):
We leave Dinant and pass by the Bayard rock where an engraved stone indicates the place where three German soldiers, driving an American Jeep and dressed in American uniforms, jumped on a mine. It is the closest point to the Meuse reached by the Germans during the Offensive of the Ardennes.
At the Celles crossroad we will also see a tank of the 2e Panzer Division.
We drive then towards Bastogne via La Roche-en-Ardenne, almost destroyed by Allied bombardments, at the cost of many civil lifes.
Arriving at the Mardasson, we meet our guide, specialist in the Battle of the Bulge. After the visit of the Memorial and crypt, we set out again for a guided battle field tour of approximately 2 hrs, visiting Bizory - Bois de la Paix - Bois Jacques - Foy - Noville - Recogne.
Before driving back to Dinant, we also visit the Gen. McAuliffe cellar.

----------

Excursion 5 (one day tour):
- Morning: visit to the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial near Neupré (Neuville-en-Condroz)
The approach drive leads to the memorial, a stone structure bearing on its facade a massive American eagle. Within are the chapel and three large wall maps composed of marble panels depicting combat and supply activities. Along the outside of the memorial, inscribed on granite slabs, are the names of 462 of the missing, whose remains were never recovered or identified.
The cemetary, 90 acres in extent, contains the graves of 5,329 of American military dead, many of whom died in the Ardennes '44 winter offensive (Battle of the Bulge). Their headstones are aligned in straight rows that compose the form of a huge Greek cross on the lawns and are framed by tree masses.
- Noon: a quick lunch on the Place Mc Auliffe in Bastogne
- Afternoon: guided Bastogne battlefield tour
The tour starts with a short introduction, gathered around the 11th Armored Division "Thunderbolt" Sherman tank, "Road to Liberty" milestone and the McAuliffe Monument at the Place McAuliffe. We set off for the battlefield tour: Bizory, Bois de la Paix (Peace Wood), Bois Jacques (foxholes of the "Easy Company", well-known from the "Band of Brothers"), Foy, Recogne (US temporary cemetary and German cemetary), Noville (Combat Team Desobry), Mardasson and Gen.
